What should I do if I find a nestling/fledgling bird?

It's fledging season!!!! Juvenile Noisy Miner What to do if you find a Baby Bird Spring is about to arrive and this means lots of baby birds around in parks and gardens; however not all of these are injured or need to be “rescued”. Some of them have just fledged which means they have left the nest, are still being cared for by the parent birds and are learning the skills required to become a thriving adult bird. What to do you when you find an injured baby bird If you have found a baby bird that appears to be sick or injured it will need to come into care even if the parents are still tending to it. Put the chick into a small box with a towel and call Sydney Wildlife on 9413 4300. What to do when you find a healthy baby bird Nestling (should still be in the nest, can’t stand or perch): If the nestling is feathered and vigorous and the parents are around, place the bird back in its own nest, or if that isn’t possible, place it in a substitute nest in the same or a nearby tree

BRUSH TURKEY MANAGEMENT

"In recognising that brush turkeys may be protected what can be done about a nest which is destroying a fence and blocking drainage in an easement? 1. Is there any evidence that eggs may have been laid already in the nest? If there are females around and the male is there all the time, the likelihood is yes, eggs are being laid (the season is just beginning). If eggs are laid it is illegal to destroy them ie by dismantling the nest. However, considering the ramifications for the humans (blocked drainage etc) you could seek help through National Parks and Wildlife for consideration of an alternative. Possibly careful removal of the nest, with eggs to a nearby location - but that would have to be done by approved staff. 2. If there are no signs of females around, we might assume there are no eggs laid yet, in which case please dismantle the nest carefully ASAP. If, unexpectedly, any eggs are found please keep them warm and ring us right away (02 9413 4300). W

About Echidna's and what to do when you find one

We all want to help where we can, nut we might not always know what's best. First of all, you need to ask yourself the question if it's really necessary to move the Echidna. If there are no apparent signs of injury, it may not be necessary to remove it. W hat to do when you find an Echidna on the road! If injured always call your local wildlife organisation. Search the surrounding area for a puggle (baby echidna). The impact from a vehicle incident can cause a puggle to roll long distances from mum, so please search for these babies, they can look like a pinky-grey clump of clay.
